The Holy Apostle Evodius—or Euodios—of the Seventy is commemorated on September 7. Following the Holy Apostle Peter, he became the first bishop of Syrian Antioch, one of the most important centers of the early Church and the place where the disciples of Jesus were first called Christians.

St. Ignatius the God-Bearer, Evodius’s successor as Bishop of Antioch, referred to him in a letter to the Antiochians: “Remember your blessed father Evodius, who was made your first pastor by the Apostles.”

St. Evodius served the Church of Antioch as bishop for twenty-seven years. According to tradition, he wrote several works in defense and explanation of the Christian faith. In one surviving reference, he stated that the Most Holy Virgin Mary was fifteen years old when she gave birth to the Savior of the world.

Although most of his writings have been lost, the fourteenth-century Church historian Nicephorus Callistus mentioned a work attributed to Evodius entitled The Star.

After decades of faithful episcopal ministry, St. Evodius received the crown of martyrdom around A.D. 66 during the persecution of Emperor Nero.

May his prayers strengthen bishops, priests, missionaries, and all Christians suffering persecution for the Gospel.
