Christ is among us!

Have you ever wondered why God has withheld something you deeply desire—especially when another person appears to have received it? The lives of St. Joachim and St. Anna remind us that God’s apparent silence is not His rejection.

This Byzantine Catholic homily for the Nativity of the Theotokos reflects upon the unwavering faithfulness of Mary’s parents. Although righteous and extraordinarily generous, Joachim and Anna endured the sorrow and public shame of childlessness. They could easily have interpreted their suffering as a sign of God’s displeasure, yet they remained faithful.

When their pain became overwhelming, they withdrew into solitude and cried out to God from the depths of their hearts. Their prayer was not casual or superficial. They placed their deepest longing before the Lord while surrendering the answer to His will.

Inspired by the hymn “Great Is Thy Faithfulness,” this sermon reminds us that the Lord remains faithful even when we cannot perceive His mercy. We should bring our needs honestly before Him while continuing to trust and serve Him in every circumstance.

Joachim and Anna teach us to pray deeply, wait patiently, and recognize God’s daily mercies—even in the smallest things.
