When Christ heals the deaf and mute man in the Gospel, the miracle reveals something deeper about every human soul.

This Catholic homily explains spiritual deafness and spiritual dumbness as consequences of original sin: our difficulty hearing the Word of God and our reluctance to glorify Him through our words and actions.

Even after Baptism removes original sin, its wounds remain. The Church calls this concupiscence — the lingering disorder affecting our intellect, senses, passions, and desires throughout life.

One striking example is modern distraction. We can become almost addicted to our phones, computers, entertainment, and the constant noise of the world, yet struggle to pull ourselves away long enough to pray the Rosary, read spiritually, study the Catechism, or simply listen to Christ.

Anger and disordered passions can also make us spiritually deaf. Drawing from Dante’s Purgatorio, the homily describes Purgatory as the place where our appetites and passions are finally “untwisted” so they can accomplish what God intended: helping us become saints.

But there is hope.

Christ gives grace — yet grace is not magic. We must cooperate with it.

Pray. Fight sin. Discipline the passions. Turn away from distraction. Listen again.

And Christ can restore our hearing and speech so that our lives may glorify God.
