Glory to Jesus Christ! Glory forever!

On the Feast of the Nativity of the Theotokos, the Church celebrates the birth of our heavenly Mother and the first great feast of the new Byzantine liturgical year.

This Byzantine Catholic homily considers one of the feast’s most important spiritual lessons: the mysterious relationship between suffering and true Christian joy. The modern world seeks pleasure while fleeing every form of suffering, but the lives of St. Joachim and St. Anna reveal a different path. Their years of sorrow, patient prayer, and trust in God prepared the way for the extraordinary joy of the Blessed Virgin Mary’s birth.

Suffering is an unavoidable part of earthly life, but it does not have to end in anxiety, bitterness, or despair. When accepted in faith and united to Jesus Christ, trials can purify the soul, deepen our reliance upon God, and prepare us for a joy that the world cannot give.

Let us receive every permitted trial with trust in God’s providence, knowing that He can use even suffering for our salvation.
