Saints Eutychius and Florentius of Nursia, commemorated on August 23, were sixth-century monks who lived lives of asceticism, prayer, and extraordinary holiness in Italy.

St. Eutychius converted many souls through his teaching and was eventually called to become superior of another monastery.

St. Florentius became renowned for miracles—including the remarkable story of a bear he tamed and trained to serve him, tending sheep, carrying water, and obeying his commands.

But jealousy entered the monastery. Four monks killed the bear, and Florentius prayed that God’s wrath would fall upon them. When the monks were later struck with leprosy and died, Florentius was horrified by what had happened. Considering himself responsible for their deaths, he wept for them for the rest of his life.

St. Eutychius worked no miracles during his lifetime, but after his death his cloak became associated with healings. During a severe drought in 1492, the people carried his cloak into the fields—and rain followed.

Their lives remind us that sanctity includes miracles and asceticism, but also repentance, humility, mercy, and sorrow for our own faults.
