Why do the saints seem to experience God so deeply while many of us struggle even to feel His presence?
The answer may have everything to do with the eye of the soul.
In this powerful homily, we explore Christ’s words: “The eye is the lamp of the body.” The Fathers of the Church teach that these words point beyond our physical sight toward the spiritual faculty often called the nous — the eye of the soul through which we perceive God and spiritual truth.
But that spiritual vision can become clouded.
Sin, passions, entertainment, attachments, pride, comfort, and the distractions of worldly life can gradually make us spiritually blind. We may sincerely desire salvation and union with Christ while still holding tightly to the very things preventing us from drawing closer to Him.
That is why the Christian life requires purification.
St. Paul commands us not to be conformed to this world, but to be “transformed by the renewal of your mind.” The saints show us what that transformation looks like in practice: prayer, fasting, repentance, spiritual reading, good works, moderation, detachment, and the willingness to disrupt comfortable habits for the sake of Christ.
You do not have to become a monk to begin.
Perhaps it means spending less time watching television and more time praying. Perhaps it means replacing mindless entertainment with the writings of the saints. Perhaps it means finally confronting an attachment that continually pulls you away from God.
The question is simple:
What occupies the place in your life that belongs to God?
The saints did not discover a secret Gospel unavailable to us. They took seriously the Gospel we already possess.
And their invitation remains open to every Christian.
May we cleanse the eye of the soul, seek first the Kingdom of God, and experience His grace so profoundly that, as the beautiful saying attributed in this homily to St. Paisios expresses it, it would take a crane to pull us out of the church.
