Blessed Bernard of Offida, commemorated on August 23, was born in 1604 to a poor family and spent his childhood tending sheep before entering the Capuchin Order as a lay brother.

His life was marked by extraordinary humility, charity, prudence, and zeal for souls.

Bernard became known for giving so generously to the poor that his own religious brothers complained he was too liberal with the convent’s alms. When he was publicly reprimanded, the humble friar received the correction with joy.

Later, as a questor begging alms from door to door, Bernard often gave more than he received. People sought him out for counsel, consolation, reconciliation, and help. Hardened sinners were moved by his exhortations, and families at odds found peace through him.

His reputation for holiness became so great that people even came asking him directly for miracles.

In one remarkable account, a mother brought him her gravely ill child, who died in Bernard’s arms. She refused to let him leave unless he restored the child to life. Bernard placed the child before the altar of St. Felix of Cantalice, prayed—and the child was restored in perfect health.

Blessed Bernard died in 1694 at the age of 90 and was beatified in 1795.
