The Rich Young Man had kept the commandments, lived morally, and possessed great wealth—but Jesus called him to something deeper: “Sell all that you have… come and follow Me.”
Why wasn’t simply keeping the commandments enough?
In this powerful reflection, we examine Christ’s encounter with the Rich Young Man and the deeper meaning of Christian perfection. Jesus does not merely demand external obedience. He calls for the transformation of the heart: complete love of God, love of neighbor, detachment from worldly possessions, and ultimately the surrender of everything that keeps the soul from Him.
The command to “sell all you have” reaches beyond money. It confronts our attachments, pleasures, ambitions, relationships, desires, and anything we might attempt to carry with us instead of giving ourselves completely to God.
But Christ also reveals something essential: “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” Salvation and perfection cannot be achieved by human effort alone. Through Christ’s Death and Resurrection and through the Sacraments—especially Baptism and the Holy Eucharist—God accomplishes within us what we cannot accomplish ourselves.
The Christian life is therefore both grace and struggle: God gives Himself to us, and we are called to surrender ourselves to Him.
