Byzantine Saints: Martyr Hermenegild the Goth of Spain (1 November)

On November 1st, the Church commemorates Saint Hermenegild, the holy martyr and Prince of the Goths in Spain (†586). Once an Arian heretic, he was converted to the Orthodox Catholic Faith through Saint Leander of Seville. Despite the threats and persecution from his father, King Leovigild, Hermenegild refused to betray Christ. On Pascha (Easter) night, when tempted with Arian communion, he chose martyrdom over heresy — becoming a shining example of unwavering faith.

This account, drawn from Saint Gregory the Great’s Dialogues, tells of Hermenegild’s imprisonment, steadfast confession, and the heavenly miracles surrounding his death. His sacrifice became the seed of faith that brought the Visigothic nation back to the True Church under his brother, King Reccared.
