On November 2, the Church commemorates Blessed Margaret of Lorraine, a holy duchess who turned her back on worldly honors to serve God and the poor. Born of royal blood — the granddaughter of King René of Anjou and daughter of Yolanda of Lorraine — Margaret lived a life marked by charity, humility, and devotion.

After the death of her husband, Duke René of Alençon, she dedicated herself to the spiritual formation of her children and to the welfare of her people. Under the influence of Saint Francis of Paola, she embraced a life of austerity, eventually founding a Poor Clare convent in Argentan, where she lived and died as a humble nun in 1521.

This episode from The Lives of the Saints by Father Alban Butler recounts the inspiring journey of a noblewoman who traded power for poverty and service — a true model of Christian virtue.
