At the end of our lives, each of us must give God a complete account of our stewardship. How have we used the time, talents, sufferings, joys, and spiritual opportunities He placed within our hands?

In this Catholic sermon, we examine Christ’s parable of the unjust steward and His warning that the children of this world are often more prudent in earthly affairs than the children of light are in preparing for eternity. Every moment is an opportunity to grow in grace, make reparation for sin, and assist souls in purgatory.

The sermon also explains the Catholic teaching on indulgences: the remission of temporal punishment due to sins that have already been forgiven. Learn the difference between partial and plenary indulgences, who may receive their benefits, and the conditions ordinarily required to gain a plenary indulgence.

Common indulgenced works include:

• Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament for at least 30 minutes
• Reading Sacred Scripture for at least 30 minutes
• Praying the Rosary with a family or group
• Making the Stations of the Cross

The usual conditions include being in the state of grace, complete detachment from every sin, sacramental confession, receiving Holy Communion, performing the prescribed work, and praying for the intentions of the pope.

Drawing upon the spiritual wisdom of St. Faustina, St. Leonard of Port Maurice, and St. Gertrude the Great, this sermon reminds us that our prayers and sacrifices can bring tremendous relief to the faithful departed.

Let us use every moment wisely, grow in love for God and neighbor, and generously assist the holy souls awaiting the vision of God.
