Fr. Chad Ripperger explains why Catholics must pray for the souls in purgatory and renew their devotion to the faithful departed through prayer, Masses, and indulgences.

November is dedicated to the Holy Souls—the Church Suffering. In this traditional Catholic sermon, Fr. Ripperger discusses purification before heaven, the distinction between partial and plenary indulgences, and the importance of helping those who can no longer merit for themselves.

What did older prayer books mean by “100 days” or “seven years” of indulgence? Father explains why these expressions did not refer to that exact amount of time removed from purgatory. He also shares his concerns about changes to partial indulgences and declining devotion to the poor souls.

Drawing on the biblical call to pray for the dead, this homily encourages us to remember deceased loved ones and souls who have no one to pray for them. Father concludes by recommending Fr. F. X. Schouppe’s book on purgatory.
