Fear and anxiety are among the most common struggles in the spiritual life — but Catholic tradition teaches that these emotions can become powerful instruments of sanctification.
In this sermon, we explore the Catholic understanding of fear through the wisdom of St. Thomas Aquinas, the example of Christ in the Agony in the Garden, and the heroic virtues of the saints.
Our Lord Himself experienced fear and sorrow before His Passion, yet He transformed that fear into perfect obedience: “Not my will, but Thine be done.” Through His example, we learn how fear should not dominate us but be directed toward virtue through reason, grace, and fortitude.
Drawing from Thomistic psychology and Catholic spiritual theology, this talk explains:
• Why fear itself is not sinful
• When fear becomes spiritually dangerous
• How anxiety can become a path to holiness
• The relationship between grace and human nature
• Practical methods for confronting irrational fear
• The role of virtue, prayer, and the Psalms in spiritual resilience
• The example of St. Thérèse of Lisieux and heroic virtue in hidden suffering
The saints teach us that holiness does not come from having easy emotions — but from choosing God despite them.
Through Christ’s Passion, we learn to transform fear into courage, anxiety into prayer, and suffering into sanctification.
