Blessed Ollegarius of Tarragona (6 March): Butler's Lives of the Saints

Blessed Olegarius of Tarragona was a courageous bishop and archbishop who defended the Christian faith during the struggles of medieval Spain against the Muslim Moors. Born into a noble Visigothic family in Catalonia, he dedicated his life to God at a young age and entered the community of canons at the Church of St. Eulalia in Barcelona.
Known for his humility, Blessed Olegarius initially refused the office of bishop and even went into hiding. Yet through obedience to the Church and the will of God, he became Bishop of Barcelona and later Archbishop of Tarragona.
At the First Lateran Council, he successfully petitioned the Pope to extend crusader privileges to Christians fighting in Spain during the Reconquista. As papal legate, he preached the crusade against the Moors and helped restore Christian territories.
Blessed Olegarius also worked tirelessly to rebuild the devastated city of Tarragona, promoted the Knights Templar, and showed deep compassion for the sick, the poor, and the mentally ill.
Even when confronting powerful rulers, he remained fearless in defending justice and the rights of the Church.
His life is a powerful example of Catholic leadership, humility, courage, and charity.
