In this episode of The Lives of the Saints by Father Alban Butler, we honor St. Canice (also known as St. Kenny or St. Kenneth), the holy abbot of Ireland, commemorated on October 11th.

Born in 527, St. Canice dedicated his youth to study and spiritual formation under holy abbots in Wales and Ireland, including St. Finan at Cluain Iraird. His zeal and labor for Christian perfection made him one of Ireland’s most glorious saints, spreading holiness and learning throughout the land.

St. Canice shared a deep friendship with St. Columba (Colum Cille), whom he often visited on the Isle of Hy (Iona). He founded the monastery of Aghaboe (meaning “the ox’s field”), which became a major center of faith and learning. The later city of Kilkenny takes its name from him — “Cill Chainnigh,” meaning “Church of Canice.”

🕊️ Join us as we explore the holy life, faith, and legacy of St. Canice, whose humility, scholarship, and missionary zeal continue to inspire the faithful today.
