“Walk ye worthily in your vocation.”
On the 17th Sunday after Pentecost, St. Paul gives Christians a powerful command: live in a manner worthy of the calling you have received. But these words become even more striking when we remember where St. Paul wrote them—from imprisonment, with chains upon his wrists for the service of Christ.
In this sermon directed especially toward religious sisters and those discerning religious life, we hear that perseverance requires continually returning to the original call of God and renewing our first love for Jesus Christ.
The religious vocation is not a call to comfort, independence, or doing one's own will. St. Paul's chains become an image of something deeper: the soul must willingly chain itself to the love of Christ. Christ Himself remains waiting in the tabernacle, calling souls to surrender their hearts to Him.
The sermon then takes us spiritually into Gethsemane. Christ asks His disciples, “Couldst thou not watch one hour?” In the sufferings of His Mystical Body, Christ continues to seek souls willing to remain with Him, console Him, pray, sacrifice, and make reparation. Pasted text
And Jesus is not waiting for perfect people.
Like St. Peter, those beginning their vocation may be weak and untrained. They may stumble. They may not know what lies ahead. Yet Christ first asks for something beautifully simple:
“Give Me thy heart.”
The sermon closes with a profound reminder attributed here to St. Francis de Sales: we all have a vocation. God has a place for each person and a particular need that person is called to fulfill.
There is a place in the Sacred Heart of Jesus that corresponds to the love you can give Him. Respond to His call. Entrust yourself to His grace. And remember that God's work in a soul often unfolds little by little.
🙏 Please pray for an increase in holy religious vocations and for the perseverance of priests, monks, brothers, sisters, and all those discerning God's call.
