Alleluia! Join The CatholicTV Network for the full Daily Catholic Mass celebration on this Fourth Sunday of Easter, traditionally known as Good Shepherd Sunday. We are grateful to welcome Father Walter Carreiro as our celebrant as we continue this Easter season, reflecting on our call to listen to the Lord’s voice amidst the noise of the world.
In today’s moving Homily, Father Carreiro explores the intimate relationship between the shepherd and his flock. Drawing from St. Peter’s bold call to repentance and Jesus’ declaration as the "Gate for the sheep," we are reminded that the Eucharist is our primary opportunity to reconcile with the Lord and sharpen our ears to His call. We are encouraged to recognize that Jesus is the "only voice" worth following—the one that leads us away from the "thieves and robbers" of despair and into the fullness of life. This Mass is a powerful invitation to settle in the "eternal pastures" prepared for us by the precious blood of the Son.
The Scriptures highlight the gift of the Holy Spirit and the protection of the Shepherd:
-The First Reading (Acts 2:14, 36-41): On the day of Pentecost, Peter proclaims to the house of Israel that God has made Jesus both Lord and Christ. When the people are "cut to the heart," Peter instructs them to repent and be baptized for the forgiveness of their sins and the gift of the Holy Spirit, leading three thousand people to be added to the Church that day.
-The Responsorial Psalm (Ps 23): A song of ultimate comfort: "The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want".
-The Second Reading (1 Peter 2:20b-25): St. Peter reminds the faithful that Christ suffered for us, leaving an example to follow in His footsteps. By His wounds we have been healed, and though we were straying like sheep, we have now returned to the "Shepherd and Guardian of our souls".
-The Holy Gospel (John 10:1-10): Jesus uses the figure of speech of the sheepfold, explaining that the shepherd enters by the gate and the sheep recognize his voice. He declares, "I am the gate for the sheep," promising that whoever enters through Him will be saved and find pasture. He contrasts His mission with that of the thief, stating: "I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly".
May the kind Shepherd look upon His flock and be pleased to settle us in eternal pastures through the grace of this Paschal season.
