Does forgiveness mean ignoring wrongdoing or abandoning justice? This Catholic homily explores Jesus’ command to love our enemies in Luke 6 and explains why mercy does not mean excusing evil.
Beginning with the Sermon on the Plain, the homily considers Christ’s challenging words: love those who hate you, bless those who curse you, and pray for those who mistreat you. These commands challenge our desire for retaliation and call us to reflect the mercy of our heavenly Father.
The sermon then addresses anger, resentment, and forgiveness. Anger can arise in response to injustice, but we must resist nurturing it, dwelling on it, or allowing it to govern our actions. Forgiveness involves a willingness to release bitterness—even when painful feelings take time to subside.
Drawing on commentary by Jimmy Akin and a passage from Pope John Paul II, the homily distinguishes forgiveness from overlooking harm. Mercy and the requirements of justice belong together.
The closing reflection turns to the Our Father, Christ’s prayer from the Cross, and our participation in His life. We forgive through His grace, remembering the mercy He has first shown us.
Suggested follow-up: read Luke chapter 6 in full and reflect on how Christ’s teaching can shape your response to anger and personal injury.
