How do people live without faith in a world filled with war, political polarization, economic turmoil, suffering, and uncertainty?

This homily reflects on the famous Carthusian motto:

“The Cross stands still while the world turns.”

The world has always known turmoil. From the persecutions of the early Christians under the Roman Empire to the crises of our own age, human powers rise and fall.

But the Cross remains.

In today’s Gospel, Pilate tells Christ that he has the power to release Him or put Him to death. Pilate represents the illusion of worldly power—the belief that empires, governments, and human institutions are ultimately in control.

But history tells a different story.

The Roman Empire passed away.

The Cross of Christ remained.

That same truth must shape our own lives. The Cross should stand at the center, while everything else—news, politics, fear, uncertainty, success, failure, and suffering—is judged in its light.

The Christian does not deny the chaos of the world.

He simply refuses to make it the center.

The Cross of Christ is the center.

Everything else passes.

Christ remains.
