On September 14, The Lives of the Saints recounts the remarkable story of St. Notburga of Rattenberg, a poor Tyrolean peasant girl who entered domestic service and became famous for her charity toward the poor.

While working in the castle of Count Henry of Rattenberg, Notburga gathered food left from the lord’s table and distributed it to hungry beggars. She even sacrificed part of her own ration for them.

After being forbidden to continue these charities and eventually dismissed, Notburga entered service on a farm at Eben. There tradition remembers one of the most famous episodes of her life: when ordered to continue harvesting after the Saturday bells announced Vespers and the beginning of Sunday, she refused. According to the legendary account, she threw her sickle into the air—and it remained suspended like a crescent moon.

Notburga later returned to Rattenberg as housekeeper and once again ensured that the poor received daily assistance.

At her death she asked that her body be placed upon a cart and buried wherever the oxen stopped. They came to rest at the church of St. Rupert in Eben, where she was buried.

In 1862, Pope Pius IX confirmed her local cult.
