The Cross Explains the Whole Christian Life

On the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, this homily invites us to look at the Cross not only as an instrument of suffering and death, but as a profound lesson in the Christian life.

The Cross itself preaches.

The vertical beam rises toward Heaven and reminds us of the bond between God and man. Sin broke that bond, but through the Cross, Christ restores it. Like Jacob’s ladder, the Cross becomes the bridge between Heaven and earth.

It teaches the first commandment:

Love God above all things.

Our thoughts, desires, ambitions, and actions must ultimately be ordered toward Him.

Then there is the horizontal beam.

Christ stretched out His arms upon the Cross to embrace the whole world. This teaches the second great commandment:

Love your neighbor as yourself.

We cannot claim to love God while refusing forgiveness, neglecting those who suffer, or ignoring those in need.

And where the two beams meet is the Heart of Christ.

From His pierced side flowed blood and water, signs of the sacramental life of the Church and especially Baptism and the Holy Eucharist.

The Cross is therefore a school of life:

Love God.
Love your neighbor.
Remain united to Christ.

Every Holy Mass places us spiritually once again at the foot of Calvary beside Our Lady and St. John.

We adore Thee, O Christ, and we bless Thee, because by Thy Holy Cross Thou hast redeemed the world.
