What does it mean to deny yourself, take up your cross, and follow Jesus? This Byzantine Catholic homily draws on the Roman tradition of the 14 Stations of the Cross to explore repentance, surrender to God’s will, and practical works of mercy.
Preached in the festal period of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, the sermon connects Christ’s Passion with our daily Christian struggles. His acceptance of the Cross calls us to obedience. His falls invite us to rise again after sin. Simon of Cyrene and Veronica show us how to serve Christ through compassion toward others.
Drawing on St. Paul’s words, “I have been crucified with Christ,” the reflection asks us to bring our sinful passions to the Cross: anger giving way to patience, hatred to love, grudges to forgiveness, and pride to humility.
The final stations lead into a reflection on baptism, union with Christ, and the hope of resurrection. The homily concludes by connecting the way of the Cross with the seven corporal and seven spiritual works of mercy.
The Cross calls for a response in our lives: to repent, persevere, accept God’s will, and love our neighbors through concrete acts of service.
