The extraordinary story of Hieromartyr St. Alexander, Bishop of Comana, is a powerful lesson in humility, voluntary poverty, wisdom, courage, and the danger of judging a man by outward appearances.

St. Alexander was highly educated. He had studied Holy Scripture and possessed knowledge of numerous disciplines.

Yet rather than pursuing worldly recognition, wealth, or intellectual prestige, Alexander embraced an extraordinary form of voluntary poverty and humility for the sake of God.

He sold coal in the city square.

His face was regularly blackened by coal dust, and people who encountered him mocked and despised him because of his appearance.

Then the Bishop of Comana died.

As candidates were considered to replace him, the people naturally looked toward distinguished, educated, eloquent, and wealthy men.

But St. Gregory, who had been invited to participate in choosing the new bishop, reminded them of something important:

A bishop needs more than impressive appearances or worldly distinction.

Above everything else, he must possess a pure heart and a holy life.

Someone jokingly suggested that, by that standard, perhaps Alexander the coal seller could become bishop.

The joke would soon become something no one expected.

Alexander was summoned.

When the dirty coal seller appeared before the gathering, the people laughed.

Alexander simply stood there humbly, ignoring their ridicule.

But St. Gregory investigated further.

Alexander was eventually forced to reveal the truth.

The supposedly ignorant coal seller had once been a philosopher.

He had studied Holy Scripture.

His poverty was not evidence of failure or ignorance.

He had voluntarily chosen poverty and humility for the sake of God.

After St. Gregory had Alexander washed and clothed, he brought him before the people again and publicly questioned him concerning Holy Scripture.

Alexander answered with the knowledge and wisdom of a true pastor.

The laughter stopped.

The people were astonished.

The man they had judged by the dirt on his face possessed extraordinary wisdom and humility.

With one accord, they elected Alexander their bishop.

After his ordination, the new bishop preached with such power and grace that the people rejoiced that God had given them such a wise shepherd.

But Alexander's story did not end with his elevation to the episcopacy.

When persecution came, St. Alexander openly confessed Jesus Christ and refused to worship idols.

According to the account, after suffering torture, he was thrown into a fire and surrendered his life to God.

The transcript notes differing traditions concerning which emperor ruled at the time of his martyrdom, but its central testimony remains the same:

The humble coal seller became a bishop.

The bishop became a martyr.

And the man the world once laughed at remained faithful to Jesus Christ unto death.

St. Alexander's story confronts our obsession with appearances, status, possessions, education, reputation, and worldly success.

And when following Christ eventually demanded his life, Alexander did not abandon the Lord for whom he had already surrendered everything else.
