Discover the powerful story of Saint Hippolytus of Rome, together with the martyrs Concordia, Irenaeus, and Abundius.
According to this account, Hippolytus was a chief prison guard at Rome who was converted to Christ by Saint Lawrence the Archdeacon. After Lawrence’s martyrdom, Hippolytus courageously buried his body.
When this became known, Hippolytus was arrested and brought before the emperor. Asked whether he had taken Lawrence’s body, he openly confessed his faith.
Even while being brutally beaten, his answer remained:
“I am a Christian.”
The emperor attempted to remind Hippolytus of his former military calling and ordered him to sacrifice to the pagan gods. Hippolytus instead declared:
“I am a soldier of Christ my Savior, and I desire to die for Him.”
His possessions were confiscated. His foster mother, Saint Concordia, was whipped, and members of his household were executed before his eyes.
Finally, Hippolytus was tied to wild horses and dragged over stones to his death on August 13.
Later, the Christians Irenaeus and Abundius recovered and buried the body of Concordia. For this act of Christian charity, they too suffered martyrdom.
Their witness reminds us that discipleship requires courage, fidelity, and love even when following Christ comes at great cost.
🙏 Saint Hippolytus, Saint Concordia, Saint Irenaeus, and Saint Abundius, pray for us.
