How often do we ask God for what we want rather than what we truly need?

In this sermon for the Seventh Sunday after Pentecost, we meditate on the beautiful Collect of the Traditional Latin Mass, which asks God to remove whatever is harmful and grant whatever truly benefits our souls.

This profound prayer teaches complete trust in Divine Providence. God alone sees all of history, knows every circumstance of our lives, and orders everything toward our eternal salvation. Even trials, disappointments, illnesses, and crosses can become instruments of grace when accepted according to God's holy will.

Drawing upon the wisdom of St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Augustine, Sacred Scripture, and St. Francis de Sales, this homily reminds us that sanctifying grace—not worldly success—is our greatest treasure.

May we learn to pray with Christ in Gethsemane:

"Not my will, but Thine be done."
