St. Eusebius, Priest and Martyr, remained faithful to Jesus Christ even when threatened with torture and death.
In this August 14 reading from The Lives of the Saints by Father Alban Butler, we hear the story of a holy priest who lived near the end of the third century during the reign of Diocletian and Maximian.
Known for prayer, apostolic virtue, and zeal in preaching Christ, Eusebius was arrested and ordered to sacrifice to pagan gods. He refused, declaring:
“Thou shalt adore the Lord thy God, and Him alone shalt thou serve.”
When threatened with torture, he answered:
“The command of God is to take place before that of man.”
Eusebius was stretched upon the rack and torn with iron hooks, yet he continued to pray:
“Lord Jesus, preserve me. Whether we live or die, we are Yours.”
Even the emperor was struck by his courage and peaceful countenance. Still, Eusebius would not compromise:
“I am a Christian.”
When threatened again with fire and the sword, he declared:
“Neither fire nor the sword will work any change in me… my soul, which is God’s, cannot be hurt by your torments.”
He was eventually condemned to be beheaded and gave his life for Christ with courage and gratitude.
St. Eusebius reminds us that worldly powers may threaten the body, but they cannot conquer a soul that belongs completely to God.
🙏 St. Eusebius, Priest and Martyr, pray for us.
