Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro is awaiting a ruling from the country’s Supreme Court. He is accused of orchestrating a coup to cling to power illegally after his 2022 electoral defeat to rival Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. One judge has already voted to convict Bolsonaro. He and his supporters, including U.S. President Donald Trump, claim the trial is politically motivated. In Washington, the Trump administration condemned the trial as "political persecution" and responded by imposing 50% tariffs on Brazilian goods, along with sanctions targeting Justice Moraes, who is overseeing the case. Bolsonaro’s son, Congressman Eduardo Bolsonaro, admitted to lobbying Washington for the tariffs, stating, “freedom comes first, before the economy.” The verdicts are expected to have significant implications for Brazil’s fragile democracy and could alter its relationship with the United States.
