The canonization of St. Pier Giorgio Frassati — known for his deep faith and love of mountain climbing — has renewed attention to how the outdoors served as a path to God for many saints. Pope St. John Paul II often turned to the peaks and heights of mountains to encounter God. In the early years of his pontificate, he would slip out of the Vatican, hiding behind a newspaper in the car, accompanied only by his secretary, Don Stanisław, and two or three other priests. Whether hiking in spring or skiing in winter, he embraced the mountains as a place of prayer and solitude. The former Personal Secretary to Pope John Paul II shared firsthand reflections on how John Paul II immersed himself in dialogue with God in the mountains and found the strength for the great challenges that awaited him upon his return to the Vatican. Both Pier Giorgio Frassati and Pope St. John Paul II found God’s majesty reflected in His wonderful creation. EWTN's Magdalena Wolinska-Riedi has more.
