The rich young man asked Jesus one of the most important questions any human being can ask: “What good must I do to possess everlasting life?” He had lived morally, practiced his religion, and kept the commandments—yet something was still missing.

Christ invited him beyond simply doing things for God into total surrender: “Come, follow Me.”

But the young man went away sorrowful because he had many possessions.

This Gospel is not a condemnation of wealth or material goods. God created the world good, and homes, property, income, talents, and resources can all be gifts of Divine Providence. The danger comes when our possessions begin to possess us.

Christian detachment means having nothing in our hearts competing with God. Whether rich or poor, every Christian must learn to hold the things of this world with open hands.

This homily offers three practical ways to grow in that freedom:

• Remember that we are stewards before we are owners
• Practice generosity through time, talent, and treasure
• Examine what causes our deepest fears and anxieties

As Christ tells His disciples: “For man it is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

May God unclench our hands, simplify our hearts, and give us the freedom to say:

“Everything I have is Yours.”
