A monk continually complained that the cross God had given him was too heavy. One night, an angel led him into a room filled with crosses of every possible size and told him to choose another. After carefully searching, the monk selected the smallest cross he could find—but the angel revealed that it was the very cross he had already been carrying.

This powerful story introduces a reflection for the Sunday after the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. Christ does not merely ask us to admire His Cross. He commands us to deny ourselves, take up our own cross, and follow Him.

The homily also explores the three dimensions of human life: the body, the soul, and the nous—the spiritual intellect through which we encounter God. Before the Fall, these existed in harmony, with the nous directing the soul and body toward God. Sin overturned that order, allowing bodily passions, feelings, and fallen reasoning to dominate us.

Baptism renews this harmony, but we must cooperate with grace. Through prayer, fasting, obedience to God’s commandments, and self-denial, our lives become simpler and our desires are reordered. We begin to seek what God wants instead of merely pursuing what pleases us.

This is true freedom in Christ. Our crosses are not meaningless burdens; patiently carried with God’s help, they expose our passions, heal our disordered lives, and form us into better Christians.

Do not ask for a different cross. Ask Christ for the grace to carry faithfully the one He has entrusted to you.
