“And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all things to myself.”

On the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, this Catholic sermon explains how Christ transforms suffering, brokenness and apparent defeat into instruments of grace.

The Church Fathers understood Christ’s being “lifted up” primarily as His Crucifixion, while Saint John Chrysostom also connected it to the Resurrection and Ascension. The Cross, therefore, cannot be separated from Christ’s ultimate triumph.

Every Christian will eventually taste something of that bitter chalice. Life can leave us perplexed, wounded and deprived of every human support. Yet it is precisely in these moments—when nothing remains upon which we can lean—that Christ invites us to depend completely upon Him.

Drawing upon Saint Bernard, the sermon explains how religious profession lifts consecrated souls above worldly attachments, allowing both prosperity and adversity to work toward their sanctification. Through Baptism, every Christian also shares in this consecration and can offer life’s trials within the mystery of Christ.

When suffering is endured with faith, hope and charity, it is never wasted. Christ draws it into His Cross and causes it to bear supernatural fruit.

Let us never despair, regardless of how severely life treats us. The Cross is not Christ’s defeat. It is His throne, His victory and the instrument through which He draws all things to Himself.
