Discover the life of Saint Simplicianus, the Roman priest whose wisdom, learning, and faith played an important role in the conversion of Saint Augustine.

Augustine opened his heart to Simplicianus, telling him about his past errors and spiritual struggles. Simplicianus responded by recounting the conversion of the celebrated Roman scholar Victorinus, whom he had instructed and baptized.

Victorinus had delayed baptism out of fear of offending influential friends, but eventually embraced the Christian Faith completely. When Emperor Julian forbade Christians from teaching, Victorinus chose Christ over his prestigious career. His courageous example deeply moved Augustine and helped lead him further toward conversion.

Saint Simplicianus was also highly esteemed by Saint Ambrose, who praised his learning, prudence, and faith. Near the end of his life, Ambrose strongly approved Simplicianus as a worthy successor.

Simplicianus eventually became Bishop of Milan, succeeding Saint Ambrose.

His life shows the tremendous influence one faithful spiritual guide can have. Through instruction, encouragement, and holy example, Simplicianus helped shape converts whose lives would influence the entire Church.
