On the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we contemplate one of the most beautiful mysteries of the Catholic Faith: Did the Virgin Mary die before she was assumed body and soul into Heaven?

Although Pope Pius XII’s solemn definition of the Dogma of the Assumption did not definitively settle the question of Our Lady’s death, ancient Eastern and Western Christian tradition strongly witnesses to Mary completing her earthly life before being gloriously assumed into Heaven.

But Our Lady’s death was unlike any ordinary death.

According to a beautiful tradition reflected upon by saints and theologians, Mary—immaculate, sinless, and perfectly united to the will of God—did not simply succumb to the corruption of fallen human nature. Her life had become so completely consumed by divine charity that she died of love.

Her suffering had already reached its terrible spiritual climax beneath the Cross, where she united herself to the Passion and death of her Divine Son.

Then, at the completion of her earthly pilgrimage, the Mother of God was taken body and soul into Heaven, where Christ crowned her Queen of Heaven and Earth.

Yet Mary’s Assumption did not separate her from her spiritual children.

From Heaven, Our Lady continues to turn toward the earth—to intercede, protect, instruct, fight for her children, and lead souls to Jesus Christ. Her maternal mission continues throughout Christian history and is dramatically manifested in events such as Our Lady of Fatima.

As Scripture beautifully says:

“Come over to me, all ye that desire me, and be filled with my fruits.”
— Ecclesiasticus 24

May the Feast of the Assumption deepen our love for the Blessed Virgin Mary and, through her, lead us into greater union with her Divine Son.

Our Lady assumed into Heaven, pray for us.
Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us.
Queen of Heaven and Earth, pray for us.
