According to the Roman Martyrology, Saint Tarcisius was carrying the Blessed Sacrament when pagans confronted him and demanded to know what he was carrying. Refusing to surrender the Body of Christ, Tarcisius was beaten and stoned until he gave his life.

Yet when his attackers searched him, they could not find the Holy Eucharist either in his hands or upon his clothing.

Pope Saint Damasus later praised Tarcisius, comparing his martyrdom to that of Saint Stephen and recounting that he preferred a violent death rather than deliver the Body of the Lord into profane hands.

Tradition remembers Tarcisius as a young acolyte entrusted with bringing Holy Communion to imprisoned Christians during the persecution of Emperor Valerian. His body was given honorable burial in the Cemetery of Saint Callixtus in Rome.

Whether young acolyte or cleric, his witness remains the same: Christ in the Holy Eucharist was worth dying for.

May Saint Tarcisius inspire us to approach the Blessed Sacrament with deeper faith, reverence, courage, and love.
