The rich young man seemed sincere. He wanted spiritual growth. He kept the commandments and even knelt before Jesus to ask:

“Teacher, what good must I do to possess everlasting life?”

Yet when Christ invited him to sell his possessions, give to the poor, and “come, follow Me,” he walked away sad.

Why?

This homily identifies four problems within the rich young man.

First, he approached Jesus as a great teacher but failed to recognize that he was kneeling before the Son of God.

Second, he was unable to see clearly the sins and disordered desires within his own heart.

Third, he approached salvation as though it were something he could accomplish or acquire for himself. But salvation cannot be purchased or earned by human power—it is a gift of God’s grace.

Finally, when Christ personally invited him to leave everything behind and become a disciple, he refused.

The Apostles also did not understand everything at first. The difference was that they followed Christ anyway. They stayed close to Him, listened, learned, and allowed Him to transform them.

The challenge now comes to us:

What fills our hearts so completely that God cannot enter?

We must simplify our lives, loosen our grip on passing things, and become vessels of the Holy Spirit.

Do not walk away sad.

Follow Christ.
