Catholic parishes are shrinking, priests are stretched thin, and the culture that once helped carry the Gospel is becoming increasingly secular. So what are we going to do?

The answer cannot simply be, “Father, what are you going to do?”

The mission of the Church belongs to every baptized Christian.

Christ already gave us our mission: go, preach, baptize, and make disciples. For more than 2,000 years, the Gospel has been handed from one generation to the next. Now it has been handed to us.

But how do we put that mission into practice?

This homily offers three simple words:

BELONG. BELIEVE. BEHAVE.

First, people need to experience the Church as a place where they truly belong.

Then we help them grow in what Christians believe—learning more deeply about Jesus Christ, the Faith, Scripture, and the teaching of the Church.

Finally, belief must transform the way we behave. Christianity is not merely something we know; it is something we live.

This applies not only to newcomers but to every one of us:

Do I belong?
Do I know what I believe?
Am I living what I profess?

The future mission of our parishes will not be accomplished by clergy alone. Every Catholic has been entrusted with the pearl of great price.

Belong. Believe. Behave. Then hand the Faith on.
