Saint Peter the Tax Collector began as a cruel and merciless official—but one piece of bread became the beginning of his conversion.

Serving as chief tax collector in Africa during the reign of Emperor Justinian, Peter was known for his hardness toward the poor. One day, annoyed by a persistent beggar, he angrily threw him a piece of bread.

That night Peter experienced a vision of his judgment. Angels placed his deeds upon a scale, but the only good deed they could find was the bread he had thrown to the beggar. Although given without love, that small act prevented the weight of his sins from completely overcoming the opposite side.

Peter awakened with a startling realization: if an involuntary gift had helped him so greatly, how much more valuable would works of mercy be when offered freely, compassionately, and from the heart?

He repented and completely transformed his life. Peter distributed alms, fed and clothed the needy, and later saw Christ in a dream wearing clothing he had given to a beggar—fulfilling the Lord’s teaching that whatever we do for the least of His brethren, we do for Him.

Peter eventually gave away all his possessions and ordered a servant to sell him into slavery, giving the payment to the poor. He then served humbly for years until his identity was discovered. Fleeing worldly recognition, he miraculously restored hearing and speech to a deaf-mute gatekeeper and remained hidden until his death.

His life was preserved by Saint John the Merciful, Patriarch of Alexandria.
