Discover the remarkable story of Our Lady of Good Health and the Marian apparitions associated with Velankanni, India—one of the world’s most visited Catholic shrines.

Christianity in India reaches back to the apostolic preaching of Saint Thomas. Centuries later, according to tradition, the Blessed Virgin appeared near Velankanni to two Hindu boys. In the first account, Mary requested milk for the Child Jesus. After the boy gave freely, his container miraculously overflowed. In the second, a disabled buttermilk vendor was instantly healed and instructed to request the construction of a Catholic chapel.

A third miraculous intervention involved Portuguese sailors trapped in a violent storm on the Bay of Bengal. After invoking Our Lady, Star of the Sea, they safely reached land at Velankanni and enlarged the chapel in thanksgiving.

Known as Arokia Matha—the Mother of Good Health—Our Lady welcomes millions of pilgrims seeking healing and consolation. Many visitors are not Catholic, yet Mary acts toward them as a mother while directing every offering toward her divine Son.
