Join The CatholicTV Network for the full Daily Catholic Mass celebration on this Saturday of the First Week of Ordinary Time, as we celebrate the Feast of St. Anthony, Abbot.
In today's profound Homily, the celebrant reflects on the famous quote from Pope Francis: "the church is not a museum for saints, but a field hospital for sinners". He reminds us that we all possess a "sickness" rooted in our broken human nature and are in constant need of the healing that only Jesus, the Divine Physician, can provide—healing not just for the body, but for the soul. Inspired by the desert father St. Anthony, the homily challenges us to separate ourselves from the noise of the world and find a "quiet place, a quiet space" each day to listen for the Lord's voice.
The Scriptures reveal God's surprising choices and Christ's radical mercy:
The First Reading (1 Samuel 9:1-4, 17-19; 10:1): Saul, a handsome young man from the tribe of Benjamin, is chosen by God to lead His people. Samuel anoints him as commander, a sign that the Lord has chosen him to save Israel from their enemies.
The Responsorial Psalm (Ps 21): A celebration of God’s strength: "Lord, in your strength the King is glad".
The Holy Gospel (Mark 2:13-17): Jesus calls Levi, a tax collector, to follow Him. When questioned by the scribes for eating with "sinners," Jesus declares: "Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do. I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners".
May we follow the example of Jesus and St. Anthony by retreating into the silence of prayer to "recharge our batteries" and focus on what is truly eternal.
