In today's deeply resonant Homily, Father Robert Casey explores the powerful details in the Healing of the Paralytic. He points out that the man did not come to Jesus by his own strength; he was "carried literally and spiritually by others". Father Casey highlights that it was the faith of the friends that moved the heart of Jesus, reminding us that we, too, are never alone or forgotten. Most importantly, he explains why Jesus offers forgiveness before physical healing: because Christ always begins at the deepest level of our needs, restoring our dignity and relationship with God before all else.
The Scriptures contrast the people's desire for an earthly ruler with Christ’s divine authority:
The First Reading (1 Samuel 8:4-7, 10-22a): The elders of Israel demand a king to be like other nations. Though Samuel warns them of the hardships an earthly king will bring, the Lord tells Samuel, "It is not you they reject, they are rejecting me as their king".
The Responsorial Psalm (Ps 89): A commitment to God's love: "Forever I will sing the goodness of the Lord".
The Holy Gospel (Mark 2:1-12): In a crowded house in Capernaum, four men lower their paralyzed friend through a hole in the roof to reach Jesus. Seeing their faith, Jesus tells the man, "Child, your sins are forgiven", before commanding him to "rise, pick up your mat, and go home".
Take comfort today knowing that just as the friends carried the paralytic, the Church carries you in prayer and love.
