St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle.

Those words are familiar to generations of Catholics—but do we still understand what “battle” means?

In this powerful homily for the feast of St. Michael the Archangel, we are reminded that the Christian life is not meant to be comfortable or complacent. It is a spiritual battlefield, and the sermon identifies two battles every Catholic must fight.

The first and most important is the interior battle. Every day we struggle against sin, temptation, vice, and complacency while trying to cultivate the virtues necessary to draw closer to the Sacred Heart of Christ.

The homily challenges the common attitude: “I am a good person.”

If we are already good enough, why do we need a Redeemer? Why do we need Jesus Christ our Savior?

The second is the external battle—remaining faithful to Christ and His Catholic Church in a world increasingly opposed or indifferent to the Faith.

Christ Himself warned that following Him would involve conflict: “I have not come to bring peace… but the sword.”

This is why the traditional Prayer to St. Michael speaks so clearly:
“St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil.”

The battle begins within our own souls: against temptation, sin, pride, and the dangerous belief that we have no need to change.

We cannot fight it alone.

As the feast of St. Michael approaches, perhaps we should ask ourselves:
How often do I actually pray the St. Michael Prayer—and do I really believe that I am in a spiritual battle?
