On September 29th, the Church remembers Blessed Richard Rolle of Hampole, a 14th-century English hermit and mystical writer. Though never officially canonized, Richard Rolle was deeply venerated for his holiness, writings, and spiritual influence. His works, such as Incendium Amoris (The Fire of Love), reveal profound mystical experiences of divine contemplation, love, and suffering for God.

Born around 1300 in Thornton, Yorkshire, Richard Rolle abandoned his studies at Oxford and Paris to embrace the hermit life. He lived in poverty, endured ridicule, and wrote extensively on prayer, mystical union, and the love of God. Though he faced opposition from clergy and laity alike, his influence reached far and wide—especially through his translations of the Psalms and spiritual writings for English nuns like Margaret Kirkby.

Rolle died on September 29, 1349, likely a victim of the Black Plague. His writings and testimony continue to inspire seekers of holiness, offering a window into the heart of medieval English mysticism.
