Who is like God?

Those words—Michael—became the battle cry associated with the faithful angels against the pride and rebellion of Satan.

In this powerful homily for the feast of St. Michael the Archangel, we explore the extraordinary mission God has entrusted to the angels and especially to St. Michael.

Angels are not merely decorative figures in Catholic art. Scripture presents them as God’s faithful emissaries and soldiers, higher than man by nature yet appointed by God to serve according to His Providence.

We also discover their connection to the Holy Mass and heavenly liturgy. The homily explores the traditional association of St. Michael with the angel standing before the heavenly altar with the golden censer, as well as the Supplices te rogamus of the Roman Canon.

From the battle against the dragon in Apocalypse 12 to the assistance given to Daniel, St. Michael appears as a defender of God's people and a model of humility. Satan declares, in effect, “I will be like God.” Michael answers: “Who is like God?”

The homily also considers St. Michael as the prince of departing souls and recounts traditions concerning miraculous healings and his appearances in Church history.

Ultimately, St. Michael teaches us that victory does not come from our own strength. Great things for God begin with humility and complete dependence upon Him.
