What is a covenant, and why is it essential to understanding the Bible, the Mass, and our relationship with God?

A biblical covenant is an extension of kinship—of family—by an oath. Throughout salvation history, God established covenants with Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, and David. Through Jesus Christ, however, God established the New and Eternal Covenant with all humanity.

Christ sealed this covenant with His Precious Blood upon the Cross. Through Baptism, we enter God’s family; through the Holy Eucharist, the Blood of Christ enters and transforms us from within. We can truly call ourselves His family because we have been united to Christ by His own Blood.

This covenant gives us freedom as sons and daughters of our heavenly Father, but it also calls us to avoid sin and live in faith, hope, and charity. Because God is faithful to His promises, we can place our complete confidence in Him.

The homily concludes with a powerful appeal to fathers: remain faithful to your wives and children. Let your fatherhood reflect God’s eternal fatherhood. Be merciful, dependable, and ready to embrace your children. Be a real man—a husband and father who keeps his promises.

May we trust God’s covenant, remain faithful to our own promises, and advance one day at a time toward everlasting life in His family.
