The passage culminates in a profound theological truth regarding God's priority: "For it is love that I desire, not sacrifice, and knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings".
-The Responsorial Psalm (Ps 51): A humble plea for restoration: "It is mercy I desire, and not sacrifice".
-The Holy Gospel (Luke 18:9-14): Jesus addresses a parable to those convinced of their own righteousness. He contrasts the Pharisee, who lists his good deeds, with the Tax Collector, who beats his breast and prays, "O God, be merciful to me, a sinner". Jesus declares that the humble Tax Collector went home justified, for "everyone who exalts himself shall be humbled, and the one who humbles himself shall be exalted".

May these Holy Gifts by which the Lord ceaselessly nourishes us, increase our faith and keep us safe for eternal life.
