The Holy Martyr Julian of Galatia and the forty Christians who suffered with him are commemorated on September 12.
During the fourth century, the priest Julian secretly celebrated the Divine Services with forty Christians in a cave near the ancient city of Ancyra. After he was betrayed to the governor, Julian was arrested and commanded to reveal his companions’ hiding place. He refused to betray his spiritual flock.
The pagans then ordered him to sacrifice to their gods. When he remained faithful to Jesus Christ, they placed him upon a red-hot iron grate. Julian made the Sign of the Cross, and an angel of the Lord miraculously cooled the flames, leaving him unharmed.
The authorities brought forth Julian’s elderly mother and threatened her in an attempt to break the martyr’s resolve. She answered with remarkable courage, refusing to cooperate with their cruelty or persuade her son to deny Christ.
Before his execution, St. Julian thanked God and prayed for the strength to complete his martyrdom faithfully. He also requested blessings for those who honored the place of his burial, asking for deliverance from sinful passions and protection for their fields.
Saying, “Lord, receive my spirit in peace,” Julian bowed his neck beneath the sword. A heavenly voice then summoned him into the Kingdom of God.
The forty Christians hiding in the cave heard that voice. Filled with courage, they emerged, openly confessed themselves Christians, and were beheaded by order of the governor.
