How are we called to build the Kingdom of God—and what foundation are we building upon?
In this homily, we reflect on St. Paul’s teaching that Jesus Christ is the one true foundation and that each of us is called to become a co-worker with God in building His Kingdom.
Drawing upon the extraordinary mission of Blessed Nykyta Budka, the first Ukrainian Catholic bishop in Canada, we see how the Church is built not merely with bricks, icons, and beautiful buildings, but through communities rooted in Christ, education in the Faith, and people willing to labor for the Gospel.
Blessed Nykyta understood the danger facing Ukrainian Catholic immigrants arriving in Canada. While preserving language and culture mattered, he recognized something even more important: they must not lose their faith.
That mission remains urgent today.
St. Paul tells us:
“For we are God’s co-workers; you are God’s field, God’s building.”
A parish may have a beautiful church. It may have strong foundations. But the work is never finished.
Building the Kingdom of God is ongoing.
God provides. God calls. God sends the people necessary for His work. But we cannot simply stand back and expect Him to do everything without us. Christians are called to cooperate with His grace—to become His co-workers.
And that raises an important question for every Christian:
What are we building with, and how are we building?
Our faith cannot stop at simply knowing facts about God. We are called to know Him personally, deepen that relationship through prayer and formation, and then bring others to that same knowledge of Jesus Christ.
The foundation has already been laid.
That foundation is Jesus Christ.
Now we must decide what we will build upon it.
🙏 If this homily strengthened your faith, share it with someone who needs to hear it.
✝️ May everything we build be founded upon Jesus Christ and directed toward His Kingdom.
