On the Feast of the Holy Name of Mary, Fr. Chad Ripperger reflects on why the Church venerates the Blessed Virgin’s name and what this feast teaches us about her intercession, mediation, and spiritual motherhood.

Fr. Ripperger explains the history of the feast, tracing its development from Spain in 1513 to its connection with the Christian victory at the Siege of Vienna in 1683. He also recalls the great naval victory at Lepanto in 1571, traditionally associated with the prayers of the Rosary confraternities.

The sermon then turns to the spiritual battles of the present age, especially the struggle against modernism. Drawing upon Pope St. Pius X’s description of modernism as the “synthesis of all heresies,” Fr. Ripperger argues that Catholics must turn to Our Lady, traditionally invoked as the conqueror of heresies.

He concludes by calling the faithful to entrust their countries, families, and those in harm’s way to the protection and intercession of the Mother of God.
