On August 22, Butler’s Lives of the Saints remembers St. Philibert, first abbot of Jumièges and founder of the monastery of Noirmoutier.

Raised under the care of his father, a bishop, Philibert was sent to the royal court while still young. The example and instruction he received there eventually left him disgusted with worldly life, and at about twenty he entered the monastery of Rebais.

After serving as abbot, Philibert traveled among monasteries observing the Rule of St. Columban before settling in what is now Normandy.

There he founded the great monastery of Jumièges. Philibert trained his monks not only in prayer but in hard physical labor, requiring them to clear rocks and drain marshland. The community grew rapidly until it numbered approximately 900 monks.

He also founded a monastery for women and other religious houses.

In 674, Philibert boldly confronted the powerful mayor of the palace, Ebroin, over acts of injustice. The resulting persecution forced him to leave Jumièges.

Rather than abandon his vocation, Philibert continued founding monasteries, including the community at Noirmoutier, where he eventually died in A.D. 684.

A remarkable life of monastic discipline, courage, leadership, and perseverance.
