On August 22 we commemorate Venerable Anthousa, Hieromartyr Athanasios, and the martyrs Charisimos and Neophytos.

St. Anthousa lived during the reign of Emperor Valerian and was born in Seleucia in Syria to wealthy pagan parents.

Desiring to see her spiritual teacher, Bishop Athanasios of Tarsus in Cilicia, she persuaded her mother to allow her to travel there under the pretext of visiting her nurse. She was accompanied by two servants, Charisimos and Neophytos.

When Anthousa finally found Bishop Athanasios, he baptized her and tonsured her as a nun.

She then withdrew into the desert, where she lived an ascetic life for 23 years before peacefully reposing.

Bishop Athanasios was later brought before Emperor Valerian. When he refused to sacrifice to idols, he was beheaded.

Anthousa’s servants, Charisimos and Neophytos, who had also received baptism, courageously confessed Christ before the emperor and were likewise beheaded.

Their lives present several forms of Christian witness: conversion, monastic renunciation, ascetic perseverance, pastoral courage, and martyrdom.
